Promethea Silkmoth

Description:

Family: Saturniidae, Subfamily: Saturniinae (Giant Silkworm Moths) Also called Promethea Moth. WS 75-95 mm. Male - Sexually dimorphic. Males have blackish wings with cream-colored band beyond ST line. Irregularly shaped pale reniform spots mark all wings. Pale border of HW is accented with a row of blackish bars. Adults do not eat. Hosts: Deciduous trees and shrubs including cherry, maple, spicebush, apple.

Habitat:

Woodlands - Found on back deck before nightfall right before 6 p.m. (No light was on)

This one looked newly emerged! The woods isn't far from the deck. It was behaving as if still drying its wings. I saw 3 last year, but this was especially black!
