Mangrove leaf galls

Diptera

Description:

A leaf gall infesting the Grey mangroves in Westernport Bay. Sharing the leaves with an introduced waxy scale (last pic)

Habitat:

Mangroves growing within a very large, sheltered bay with good tidal exchange.

Notes:

These are the southern most mangroves in the world and are a critical component in the local and nearby coastal ecosystem. My best guess at this stage is midges... Cecidomyiidae
