Snowy Plover

Charadrius nivosus

Description:

Small Plover related to the Killdeer. Light brown on the back, white underneath. White above bill with a black patch above that. Black short bill medium length legs. Black patch behind the eyes and what I would say is a black broken necklace but is actually two patches on the sides of the short neck.

Habitat:

Prefers shorelines or like here dried up marsh bottom.

Notes:

Sorry about the quality. They were about 200+ ft out.

In SF Chrisy Fields they close the beaches during breeding season but dog walkers ignore the signs

This is a federal threatened species in California, Oregon, and Washington. The tidal wetland restoration plans in San Francisco Bay include the creation of nesting islands. Years ago, I observed a few pairs nesting on salt pond levees in south San Francisco Bay. The transition from salt ponds to tidal salt marsh should be interesting.
