A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
maniola jurtina
The meadows were just bursting with these butterflies, on all sorts of flowers! the ones photographed are the females as they have a larger eye spot than the male. One of the most widespread butterflies in the British Isles that can be found between June and September across most grasslands. Adults have between 42 and 60mm ws.
seen in Low common Meadows, maltby. Owned by the Yorkshire wildlife trust.
There are 4 subspecies in Britain but the differences are to subtle for me to be able to differentiate.
