Papilio alphenor ledebouria
Papilio alphenor (Cramer, 1776) ssp ledebouria (Eschscholtz, 1821) is the Philippine version of the Common Mormon (Papilio polytes) which is a common species of swallowtail butterfly widely distributed across Asia (D'A treat this as subspecies of P.polytes). This black-bodied butterfly is known for the mimicry displayed by the numerous forms of its females which mimic inedible Red-bodied Swallowtails, such as the Common Rose (Atrophaneura (Pachliopta) aristolochiae) and the Crimson Rose (Atrophaneura hector).
Backyard, spotted nectaring on flowers of Dwarf Poinciana (flying from about 4ft to 7ft above ground) and Madagascar Periwinkle (1ft from ground).
