American alligator

Alligator mississippiensis

Habitat:

Open area within a cypress swamp.

Notes:

A fire several years ago significantly reduced canopy cover in this area. In addition, recent rains had resulted in flooding of large parts of the forest and the inundation of basking logs and shoreline. I assume that most small alligators dispersed into nearby shallow areas, because we only encountered larger individuals along this part of the river.
