Description:

Encrusting algae with the appearance of encrusting red algae except that the color is white. Also described as "bleached."

Habitat:

Intertidal Zone 2 and 3 encrusted on rock surfaces.

Notes:

White encrusting algae cannot commonly be found in online references for marine algae. Steneck and Martone report on calcified algae in "Tidepool 2007" http://www3.botany.ubc.ca/martone/Stenec... and Martone Tidepool 2007.pdf Is calcification an explanation for instances of white encrustations?
