Giant Stag Beetle

Lucanus elaphus

Description:

2 inch long reddish beetle with large horns (male) and serrations on the legs that help it cling.

Habitat:

Rural yard adjacent to wooded forest.

Notes:

This one literally landed at my feet.

Thanks everyone! It is definitely a favorite beetle of mine. This seems to be a really good year for them here too. I have found 3 so far this year.
