Amelanchier arborea
This is one of the earliest small trees or shrubs to bloom during the spring. Downy Serviceberry is fairly easy to identify as its young leaves are exceptionally hairy (especially on their undersides).
Native to eastern North America from the Gulf Coast north to Thunder Bay in Ontario and Lake St. John in Quebec, and west to Texas and Minnesota.
Spotted along the trail at the Allatoona Pass Battlefield.
