Description:

Showy wildflower in the legume family. Woody stems ... can grow to be a small tree in the right climate. Gets its name from the knobby pods with bright red seeds that develop in the fall. Found throughout Southeast U.S.

Habitat:

Near the shore of a lake

Notes:

Other common names: Cherokee bean, Red cardinal, Cardinal spear.
In Louisiana, known as Mamou.

Hi Teresa, red things are always a problem, you never know. But, very cool plant ... I was surprised to learn that it could, under the right conditions, grow up to be a tree. Really? Well, yes, apparently so. Live and learn!

Dang. This spotting made me a little crazy this morning. Because of its appearance ... startling how different a photo can look from one computer to another or to an iPhone. What a complicated world we live in, neh?
