Black-Crowned Night-Heron/ ‘Auku‘u

Nycticorax nycticorax

Description:

This heron was taking flight to change the direction he was facing! :) Unfortunately, I could only get so close and zoom in only so far, so picture 5 is a close up of the same species just another bird. These are the only Hawaiian native waterbird species that is not endemic or a subspecies. They are a state protected species, but not federally protected as they are not genetically different from mainland species.

Notes:

Photo taken at Hamakua Marsh.
