Spotting

Description:

Um, any clue what this could possibly be? Found it in the dirt while turning it over for the garden. It looks like it could possibly be a pupae that died? It has little eyes and what looks like was a tail. Any ideas?

Habitat:

Found in a sort of sandy dirt in Edmonton, Alberta. We have nearby cedar hedges, apple trees, cherry blossoms, raspberry bushes, and other deciduous trees that I'm unsure about.

It should continue with it's metamorphosis if it is healthy as far as I know. It will be interesting to see what comes out

Is there anything I can do to encourage it's continued growth to ensure it comes out alright?

Never mind, not a sphinx moth because they have this weird stem like thing coming out of the top of the cocoon.

So it's likely a sphinx moth at that size. It's probably not dead. It's in it's pupae state (turning into a moth.)

He's about 5 cm (2 inches) long. So would this be a dead caterpillar then? Or?

It's a moth. Many species do this. How big is this one?
