A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Small; the shell was maybe a little less than an inch long. The snail was very active at night, and was quite a noisy eater. I believe I fed it herbs and lettuce before releasing it.
Found in the middle of a gravel road (hiding inside the shell at the time). The road is privately owned and travels through woodlands/swamps to a large open gravel pit.
I thought that the snail inside the shell had died, as I found it in October and it showed no signs of life for several days on my dresser. I decided to attempt cleaning out the shell by rinsing it in water, and put it on the windowsill to dry. I was shocked and pleased to find the little guy crawling around minutes later! I may have woken him/her from hibernation with my bath (sorry). I released the snail after a day of observation so that it could properly hibernate.
