A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Vespa velutina sp.
A large wasp, approaching an inch in length. Distinctive coloration, red patches on top of thorax and yellow markings towards tip of abdomen. A thin yellow line at end of first abdomen segment, which defines the species.
I strongly suspect this is a local subspecies.
Adjacent to a small stream. Altitude 1000m.
Wasps have such good vision, making them extremely difficult to approach. I managed to get close to this one by using a bush for cover.
Thanks to Jason Alexander for identifying this hornet: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/223...
