This spiny fruit from the Achiote tree or shrub is commonly used for the pigment in the seeds. This bright seeds can be crushed into a paste for body paint, food coloring, or dyeing fabrics. It also has numerous medicinal properties used to treat skin problems, dysentery, fevers, digestive problems, and heartburn. These uses and many more have been traced back to ancient Peruvian Indians.
It is native to tropical America. It can be found along many of the trails along ACTS and Explorama lodges.

and also is used as a seasoning for traditional dishes as "Cochinita Pibil"
which are delicious, and I strongly recommend if visiting the Yucatán Península. Cheers on a lovely photo.
