Australian Flour Lepidella

Amanita farinacea

Description:

Stark white caps of about 60 mm on flaky white stalks. The mushroom caps were soft and the ragged remnants of the universal veil hung like lace work around the margin. Gills were close and white. The stipe was covered with powdery white tissue and a delicate jagged-edged ring was seen in the upper third of the stipe. The stipe base was bulbous and only partially visible but there was a scattering of white material all around the fruiting body. Pic 6 shows a younger cap which is more convex. The cap flattens as it matures.

Habitat:

Spotted in a eucalyptus forest.

Notes:

A lovely sight to behold from afar and beautiful close-up ! Young caps have small concial warts which fall off as the cap matures. family: Amanitaceae

Thanks for the comments Neil & Martin. These are supposed to be common but I never thought I'd see one - just amazing, like powdery icicles. I think I found a few very old ones nearby and I must say they are not very attractive as they age.
