Mazarine Blue (male)

Description:

The wings of this butterfly species are dark blue with a dark brown fringe on the dorsal view for the male; the female is entirely brown. The ventral view shows small black markings with no orange spots or marginal markings; it resembles that of Cupido minimus, a much smaller butterfly. The Mazarine Blue's numbers have been declining in Europe.

Habitat:

Alpine meadow with rocky outcrops, treeline limit; alt. ~ 1750 m. Last picture shows the habitat.

Notes:

Wingspan 32-38 mm. Flight time is May to August. Linked to Fabaceae. Its generic habitat is meadows, pastures, grasslands and flowery areas.
