Description:

Large fly. Follows people walking trails any time of day. Comes into clearings and gatherings at dusk. Bites really hard.

Habitat:

Abundant in the Amazon rainforest of SE Ecuador.

Notes:

This is one fly that the native population try to watch out for. In the evenings you can see them jumping up, swatting, hitting each other (theoretically to kill flies :-). "The bite of the tábano is one of the most painful of any insect"
