Brown Pelican

Pelecanus occidentalis

Description:

Large dark brown bird with a long beak, white to pale yellow neck, black feet and legs.

Habitat:

Bay of Pacific Ocean, mouth of Chehalis river.

Notes:

This Pelican was resting on a log in the bay. It was joined shortly after by a flock of Pelicans. 22 Pelicans (total) rested on logs in the bay.The setting sun made it a great day for a Pelican observation.. I like the way Pelicans appear to look like geese or make themselves appear smaller if the gulls try to mob them. The Pelicans were grooming each other with their long beaks. Pelicans are very quite birds while they rest. Gulls sit and rest mingled with Pelicans. The geese stayed away from the Pelicans. Heron did not land near the Pelicans.
