Longlegged Fly

Condylostylus longicornis

Description:

Those long legs are no accident, especially on the males. They seem to play an important role in elaborate, unique courtship rituals in which the gentlemen show off their limbs to the ladies. Males of one species have enlarged tarsi that resemble black mittens on their front feet. On other species, the males’ enlarged tarsi look like flags. So, in a reversal of what happens in our species, it’s the females who appreciate long, lovely legs!

Habitat:

vegetable patch

Notes:

tiny and slender abdomen. Metallic shine.Flying around in the garden. Thanks, National Geographic for making this the "Picture OF The Day " for July 23rd,2013!! http://www.greatnatureproject.org/photos... Hema Shah photography

Robby,
Both larvae and adults are predaceous on many other insects and small arthropods, including mites, thrips, psocids, aphids, and other insects larvae.

These tiny flies look like flying jewelry!!
These are beneficial insects and are often used for natural pest control in gardens.
