You are right, Malcolm. I did not notice that the spotting was in the UK!!!

According to this page it could be E. tenax or E. pertinax. "The difference between the two species is the last part of the leg, just above the foot: in E. tenax it is always black and in E. pertinax it is always yellow". I reckon that in your case is E. tenax
Thanks for the info Arlanda. This one was in the UK and there are very few records of E. similis. Could it possibly be E. tenax, known as a Drone-fly?
Nice spotting, Malcolm. But it is actually a fly disguised as a bee. A Hoverfly. I have a similar one: Eristalis similis.
