Cosmophasis parangpilota
Salticidae; Heliophaninae; Cosmophasis parangpilota Barrion & Litsinger, 1995. "Cosmophasis is a genus of spiders in the family Salticidae (jumping spiders). Some species occur in Africa, while most are found in Southeast Asia, down to Australia." Wikipedia. This specimen must be a very young juvenile. It is, by far, the smallest example of this species that I have seen. I got the impression that its legs were longer (in relation to its body size) than they are in adult specimens. If I am right, then it suggests that as it develops, its body grows at a faster pace than the legs so that it ends up with the proportions I am used to seeing. As I was typing this, I paused to look again at some adult pictures side-by-side with this juvenile and I am convinced that my first impression was correct. If so, then I am certain that arachnologists are familiar with this and since I can't recall it being mentioned in anything I have read, it is probably of no importance. I mention it now so that other amateurs like me will be aware of it when they see one of these beautiful spiders.
This little Jumping Spider was spotted in our front garden on a Sugar Apple Tree (Annona squamosa) locally called Atis.
