House Gecko

Hemidactylus sp.

Description:

This house lizard has a pale colour and smooth skin.

Habitat:

These are house lizards found on the walls of almost every home in India. They are tolerated because they eat the insects. This one lived in my home when I was in New Delhi.

Notes:

This one has probably mistaken a plastic decoration for an egg...it refused to let go for a very long time. There is a mistaken belief in India that these lizards are poisonous: they are not. http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/296... Please see the difference in skin colour.

Thanks, James. It was really funny to see it holding on so stubbornly.

Not only in India, some folks from The Philippines and Malaysia also regard them as poisonous. Everytime I caught a gecko with my bare hands, my mother always asks me to wash the gecko poison off my hands :-)
