Description:

Figwort family, Scrophulariaceae. Biennial, 2 feet tall, bearing terminal cluster of tubular red-orange and green-based bracts at top of leafy stem. Blooms between May and June.

Notes:

Just bloomed. Sandy area along dunes.

Also known as Scarlet Paintbrush. It is primarily pollinated by ruby-throated hummingbirds who can transfer the pollen long distances between typically small and scattered populations of this plant. It is usually found in moist meadows, prairies, and barrens.
