Gila Woodpecker

Melanerpes uropygialis

Description:

The wings have black and white markings. The head is a pale brown. The eyes are hazy-red.

Habitat:

Hotel grounds...lovely, with lots of trees and nooks with small pools, bird baths and fountains. This tree was actually outside the hotel; along its boundary wall and a real bird magnet.

Notes:

All thanks to Brian for following up research on ID.

Brian! Thanks so much for sparing so much time and effort...I had NOT even known about the Gila Woodpecker...(only the Gila monster.)

After researching more the Gila Woodpecker looks right. I saw this one before but Wikipedia's range was well north of your location. Cornell Lab of Ornithology has it much further south.

Brian, Thanks a lot...but this bird here does not seem to have a spotted or speckled breast/front.
