Papilio dardanus
Papilio dardanus (the African Swallowtail, Mocker Swallowtail or Flying Handkerchief), is a species of butterfly in the family Papilionidae (the Swallowtails). The species is broadly distributed throughout sub-Saharan Africa. The British entomologist E. B. Poulton described it as "the most interesting butterfly in the world".
This is not my first encounter with this big bird in the backyard. I think the tranquility it enjoys here is not to be found anywhere else.
Tricky indeed! I have nearly have a dozen of them. Must be the size that fooled me.
Tricky one! What about Hypolimnas anthedon?? Please, check yourself, I am not sure. Quite a variable one. The one from the link is the best match but I have to extrapolite the hindwing from an open wing shot ;-)...
