Kodiak Brown Bear

Ursus arctos middendorffi

Description:

This bear was chasing salmon and eating some carcasses off the beach. Kodiak bears have a very salmon-rich diet. I often observe gulls milling around bears without fear, as they seem to know the bear is not interested in them while there is salmon around. The birds then pick at the discarded salmon carcasses after the bear moves on to another fish. Watch some clips I took of it here: https://youtu.be/gbojsT2pIy4

Habitat:

Mouth of a creek outside of town
