Description:

This unusual insect mimics in appearance a wasp, which probably helps deter predation. It is about 23-30 mm in length.

Habitat:

I photographed this individual in a grassland prairie environment. They are often found on flowers where they ambush and feed on other insects.

Notes:

This was my first and only sighting of this insect. Fascinating insect....
