Quiscalus quiscula

Description:

Found this little guy not acting right tangled in some short grass in our yard near a fir tree. Dunno if it fell out of a nest, cat attacked or sick.

That's too bad but not surprising. If the bird was already so debilitated that you were able to pick it up, it didn't have a good chance to make it. It's quite likely that it was injured by a predator or vehicle or perhaps ill. This bird should have been old enough to be out of the nest.

It passed away within an hour of finding it.

I would agree that this is most likely a Grackle. Did you bring him/her to a rehabilitator?

I'm gonna call that a winner, I believe the immature grackle

I think it might be a Common Grackle - go to the link and scroll to the bottom - the third picture is of a similar brown bird (immature). http://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Commo... The dents in the upper part of the beak are the same, and there is a slight hook at the end of the beak, and it has the same yellow eyes. Corvids, like crows and ravens, don't have yellow eyes like your bird. Hope the bird is feeling better!
