Nine-banded Armadillo

Dasypus novemcinctus

Description:

Though mostly nocturnal, armadillos will forage for food (normally insects/grubs) during daylight hours. This one was approximately 2 1/2 feet in length and caused great damage digging around our house (notice their claws) when looking for food during a very hot and dry spell.

Habitat:

Grasslands, open prairies as well as rainforests with a range from southern United States through portions of South America.

Notes:

I touched the 'armor' to see what it felt like. Instead of a hard, smooth shell it was fuzzy, like leather covered in a soft felt.
