Gryllus bimaculatus
African field crickets are nocturnal. Their hind legs are powerfully built like those of grasshoppers and are capable of giving serious kicks often to the surprise and subsequent deterrence of its pursuers. The sound emitted by crickets is commonly referred to as chirping; the scientific name is stridulation. Only the male crickets chirp. This species of cricket is popular for use as a food source for insectivorous animals like spiders and reptiles. They are easy to raise and do not require prolonged exposure to cold temperatures in order to complete their life cycle. They are rich protein sources in some places.
