Climbing Perch

Description:

Previously known as Anabas scandens, This perch like brown-green fish is an overland wanderer. It uses it's gill covers, pectoral fins and tail to travel overland in search of fresh ponds when it's home water is drying up. The ability to breathe out of water is due to a large gill cavity, divided into two compartments. The fish can even tolerate water with very low oxygen content simply by coming up to the surface to take a gulp of air every few minutes.

Habitat:

This fish was already dead when I found it. It got tangled in a gill net. Indeed the Climbing Perch is one of them several fishes which drown if held underwater.
