Papuan frogmouth

Podargus papuensis

Description:

I found this Papuan frogmouth, with its signature red eyes, dead in my driveway one morning. I do not know the cause of death. It is a nocturnal species. I've never actually seen the species (live) at this location.

Habitat:

Found under a jackfruit tree (Artocarpus heterophyllus) in a large semi-urban yard & garden, near a disturbed patch of remnant lowland forest, in the equatorial tropics of northern New Guinea.

Notes:

I do not know if this bird was the victim of an air rifle or underwent normal mortality. (I neglected to try and perform a post-mortem). However this spotting does tell me that this species is part of the local fauna that I had not otherwise previously observed.

You can read from my description that I found it dead. Your other question does not relate to this spotting. Please comment on the spotting in question. Thank you.
