I do agree with bayucca's ID suggestion (Auplopus sp) makes a lot more sense than Ampulex compressa, not only because of the single pair of aft femurs only being scarlet, but also the "knee" spikes on the 2nd & 3rd pair of legs. That being said, anyone want to venture an opinion on Andrew Hardacre's specimen without knee spikes or any prey in it's jaw? ;-) [http://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-UGCLj5E0a_U/UcqGfzKNW9I/AAAAAAAADeE/aM-5qs8VHrw/s759/WaspLNEC260613.jpg]

Ha, I did not even notice the prey ;-)...! Thanks, ultramohn for confirming!

Pompilidae, Pepsinae, Auplopus sp. I would say. What do you think ultramohn?

Although it might be >Ampulex< It cannot be >compressa< which is described in Wiki (and everywhere else on the net) as having the last >two pairs of legs< with scarlet/red/orange femurs. The one in your photo has been observed parasitizing >spiders< , but so far, not cockroaches. A wasp similar to yours was photographed recently in Hong Kong. I will post yours and the other one on HKwildlife.net and see if anyone else has a good idea.

Many online sources such as Wiki depict Ampulex compressa as having 2 anterior pair of scarlet legs (femurs), whereas the spider wasp depicted above has only the rear-most leg pair with scarlet coloring. Nor, I think, has anyone ever described A. compressa as a spider predator. So far I have been unable to locate a definitive ID for a Pompilidae wasp matching the picture above, or a recent, similar one in Hong Kong (http://images3.fotop.net/albums3/summerd...).
