Western Honey Bee

Apis mellifera

Description:

Honey bees are among the most widely recognized insects in the world, perhaps because they have been cultured for so long for the delectable honey they produce. Drones and workers are typically the honey bees we see. Workers are typically colored like the individual in the photograph and are about 1 cm in length. There are other species in other parts of the world.

Habitat:

Widely spread. The mellifera are generally recognized as the European honey bee, which have been widely introduced into North and South America.
