Balanophora

Balanophora sp

Description:

parasitic flowering plant, not sure of the species

Habitat:

amazon, flooded forest

Notes:

I spotted a lot of clumps of these in Zacambu reserve. The area is seasonally flooded and I was surprised to see so much of this plant. In contrast, other forests I visited which were high ground and never flooded, hardly contained any Balanophora.

I know, you would think that right? I did too and I think I might have miscategorized some of my previous spottings of this but I looked it up and the Balanophoraceae family belongs to the Plantae kingdom. It's actually a flowering parasitic plant and not a fungi.
