Cheetah

Acinonyx jubatus jubatus

Description:

The cheetah has unusually low genetic variability. It is thought that the species went through a prolonged period of inbreeding following a genetic bottleneck during the last ice age.

Habitat:

Open country, from savannah to scrubland to desert in Africa and Asia.

Notes:

Sadly cheetahs have been extinct in India since the 1940s. They are currently listed as vulnerable as their numbers have been on decline for the last century. Photo taken at San Diego Zoo.
