Description:

Phylum: Ascomycota Subphylum: Pezizomycotina Order: Xylariales Family: Xylariaceae Genus: Camillea Species: Camillea leprieurii Unusual 1/8" (.32cm) diameter 1 1/4" (3.25cm) long black and white tubular fungus on tree trunk about 1m (3ft) above jungle floor.

Habitat:

Although this group was on a LIVE tree, most are seen on fallen/dead branches/trees in the South American rainforests (Peru/Ecuador +).

Notes:

Spores are ejected from the tubes and travel some distance (as cited in Kew Gardens notes).
