Australian Wood Duck Nesting

Chenonetta jubata

Description:

Australian Wood Ducks seen at a tree hollow, probably building thier nest. Pick #1 shows a pair - the male with a uniformly brown head and a female(seated lower) with white lines above and below the eye.

Habitat:

These birds were spotted in a reserve near a reservoir. They were flying about the trees but frequently resting on this particular Mountain Gum (Eucalyptus cypellocarpa). These birds are seen in woodlands and wetlands.

Notes:

Ducks on a tree - a strange sight !! The pair rested on what looked like a ledge and had their heads down, working on the part of the tree. Wood ducks are said to nest in tree hollows. A close-up of these Australian Duck ( also called Maned Duck) can be seen in this previous spotting: http://www.projectnoah.org/spottings/165...
