Killdeer

Charadrius vociferus

Description:

Long-legged shorebird. Brown on back and head, white breast and belly with two black bands on breast. Tail is rusty red in flight. Red eye ring.

Habitat:

Look for this bird in open areas, often nesting in short grass and areas of gravel. I've found them nesting on gravel roads and driveways and once nesting on a nearly flat, gravel-covered school roof.
