Common Mullein

Verbascum thapus

Description:

snapdragon family. Common mullein has a woolly stem with many small, yellow flowers packed along the stalk. Each flower has 5 petals and only open a few at a time, from the top down. This plant is 2 to 6 ft. tall.

Habitat:

dry, sun, fields, roadsides

Notes:

I spotted many common mullein plants along the south side of Tamarac Lake on North Cotton Lake Road. This is a European import and is know for its very soft, flannel-like leaves. Early settlers and Native Americans placed the soft woolly leaves in their footwear for warmth and comfort.
