Ladder-backed Woodpecker

Dryobates scalaris

Description:

Small black and white woodpecker. This is a male. It has a red cap on its head and a black spotted breast. The black and white barred pattern on its back gives the appearance of a ladder.

Habitat:

Brushy areas and thickets. Found year round in the southwestern part of the United States. Also found in Nevada, Colorado, Mexico, Central America, and Nicaragua.

Notes:

Upon going in from recess I heard this woodpecker before we saw it. With the class and one special student that had great tracking we were able to spot him and take some pictures. What a great find! Update: 3/2018 Little did we know that this guy was searching for a place to make a nest when we first spotted him! We now have a complete nest with the woodpeckers going in and out daily! We are anxiously awaiting to see some baby woodpeckers. The class is sooooo excited!
