Greater flamingo

Phoenicopterus roseus

Description:

Greater Flamingos are the most widespread of the six species of the Flamingo family (Phoenicopteridae)

Habitat:

Greater Flamingos are found in a variety of saltwater habitats including salt or alkaline lakes, estuaries, shallow coastal lagoons and mudflats. The Greater Flamingo rarely inhabits areas of freshwater other than using freshwater inlets for bathing and drinking. Greater Flamingos that live outside the tropics often migrate to warmer climates for the winter months. Ref:Wiki

Notes:

Tirunelveli is the southern district of Tamilnadu in India. This place has five types of lands as mentioned in Tamil literature (mountains, forest, coastal region, dry place and farming lands), The average temperature of the place is around 30 Deg-C.It attracts many kind of birds and animals, during the winter season this place will be the hub for many waders. even though this is my native place, its the first time i got a chance to see flamingos. I spotted it at a fresh water lagoon, numbers around 40.

This beautiful series was popular during our last Spotting of the Week vote Arun! Today it is our Spotting of the Day:

"A pair of Greater Flamingos (Phoenicopterus roseus) take off at a fresh water lagoon in Tamil Nadu, India, in our Spotting of the Day! The largest and most widespread species of the flamingo family (Phoenicopteridae), greater flamingos are found in Africa, in southern Europe, in the Middle East and on the Indian subcontinent. The Tirunelveli district in Tamil Nadu is home to a highly diverse flora and fauna, including overwintering birds".

Your spotting has been nominated for the Spotting of the Week. The winner will be chosen by the Project Noah Rangers based on a combination of factors including: uniqueness of the shot, status of the organism (for example, rare or endangered), quality of the information provided in the habitat and description sections. There is a subjective element, of course; the spotting with the highest number of Ranger votes is chosen. Congratulations on being nominated!
