Genetically they are closer to animals than to plants
fungi can be found in environments that are cold and dry or both. they are solitary or in small groups in sparse grass and sandy soils along the coast also in arid, sagebrush country east of the sierra nevada; uncommon.

I'm not completely convinced these aren't Coprinus comatus, but I think C. calyptratus looks promising, cool!
