about 12" tall, made of sticky mud, my guide told me these were termite mounds, though I never saw any insects in them. some of them had holes in the top and some didn't.

I spotted quite a few of these in the Amazon, though they were more prevalent in areas where the trail was wider. I'm not always looking at the ground when I'm hiking and had the unfortunate experience of stepping on a few of these unknowingly. It was always so annoying because the mud was really sticky and hard to get off my boots and I felt bad for crushing a nest, if it was inhabited.

reminiscent of some of our African termite chimneys
Yea, I when I first saw these the first thing I thought was termites. If I remember right, the holes at the top of these are for ventilation keeping the mound at the right temp. and bring oxygen throughout it.
