Castor canadensis
Beavers construct their dams to provide a defensible moat for their lodges and in doing so they create artificial ponds, altering the defined borders of the wetland ecosystem in which they reside. Young beavers typically set off downstream when looking for a place to set up their own lodge.
The photos do not do the size of this structure justice. The dam alone is more than six feet at its top above the water line.
