Pamphobetus antinous
large tarantula, about 5" legtip to legtip
amazon
We spotted this during a night hike in Tupana Aru reserve.
Martin's right! I don't think I've even heard of that genus, but that's definitely what it is.
Thanks Tina, that would have impressed me too! I'm trying to work up the courage to put a tailless whip scorpion on my face, so maybe after I've conquered that, I can move up to tarantula.
Wonderful spider and terrific shots! Too bad you did not have a picture with this little darling on your face :) That would have impressed me a lot...
I don't think the range though extends this far south. I think it's mainly Mexico and some of central America. I could be wrong though.
I'm fairly confident of this one Dan. The male has the purple iridescent legs but this is a typical female or juvenile, mainly brown. Brachypelma has a very red abdomen as this one does but it is very hairy. http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:B...
My best guess on this one would be a Brachypelma vagans, but I highly doubt they would be found that far south. I still think it might be a Brachypelma species though.
