Lesser Kestrel

Falco naumanni

Description:

Lesser Kestel is a passage migrant in the western part of India making a stopover during its long-distance migration. It breeds in Europe, Central Asia, China, and Mongolia, and spends the nonbreeding period in central and southern Africa, particularly South Africa.

Habitat:

Tal Chhapar Sanctuary in Rajasthan is a vast open Grassland habitat that offers a wider array of prey like Locusts, Desert Jirds, Larks and much more for both residents and migratory Raptors that frequent this area, especially in the winters.

Notes:

The grassland habitat provides them with ample food during their stay here. While photographing this individual, I observed it voraciously pecking on insects like Grasshoppers and Mantis from the grassland.
