Brown-belted Bumblebee

Bombus griseocollis

Description:

This medium-sized bumblee is 9.5-18 mm in length. Black wings, black head and a brown band across the abdomen between the black and yellow bands are diagnostic.

Habitat:

I photographed this in the newly-restored Coldwater Spring unit of the Mississippi National River and Recreation Area (National Park Service). It was found in a prairie area feeding on purple prairie clover.

Thanks Jen. I discovered that it is a brown-belted bumblebee in researching it. Sometimes it pays to just keep at it, although that's an hour and a half that I'll never get back....grin.
