A worldwide community photographing and learning about wildlife
Panthera leo
Bella is a resident of the Lilongwe Wildlife Centre in Malawi. She had spent years living in a tiny cage in a Romanian zoo. She became blinded by cataracts, suffered bone deformities due to malnutrition, and also was tortured with cigarette burns. The Born Free Foundation rescued her and transported her to the Malawian Centre in 2009. This Internet site give details on the effort that went into rescuing and rehabilitating her: http://www.bornfree.org.uk/campaigns/big...

In June 2013, more lions were rescued from malnutrition and an abusive situation at another zoo; this video shows the release of one family into a wildlife sanctuary in South Africa. http://www.theguardian.com/environment/v...

Aaah man, this is so sad. At least she is as safe as she can be now. Thanks for introducing me to this mission Maria! I have many spots of the poor creatures we use, abuse and throw out like unwanted gifts! :(
What a heartbreaking story.
When I was at the Centre, they explained that she had had to have an operation to remove her eye, but they never mentioned her having had cubs. I just looked on the Internet and found additional information: http://www.bornfree.org.uk/campaigns/big...

Cool, so you got the chance to visit them? She also had 2 cubs when rescued. What happened to them, do you have any idea?
